 Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration(EBUS-TBNA)using the convex-probe endobronchial ultrasound(CP-EBUS)has emerged as a new minimally invasive technology for the evaluation of the mediastinum as well as the hilum. The main purpose of the development of the CP-EBUS was for the use in lymph node staging of lung cancer. We began the development of this device in collaboration with Olympus Corporation in early 2002. Preliminary studies looking at animal models enabled us to move to clinical trials. It has now become the standard of mediastinal staging in lung cancer patients. EBUS-TBNA is now being applied to other diseases in the Thorax other than lung cancer. Although there is a significant demand for this procedure, it is still not widely available and the procedure is not routinely taught.
 EBUS-TBNA requires the skill of performing a regular bronchoscopy as well as knowledge of technical aspects of the procedure. It allows bronchoscopists to see beyond the airway, thus understanding of the mediastinal and hilar anatomy is critical for a successful and safe procedure. This book explains in details what a bronchoscopist needs to know for performing a successful EBUS-TBNA. The principle of endobronchial ultrasound, preparation of the device, a step by step guide for the procedure as well as techniques for the handling of the specimen obtained by EBUS-TBNA is described. In addition, we have included clinical cases diagnosed by EBUS-TBNA for reference. The anatomy of the mediastinum and the hilum from a bronchoscopic view will guide bronchoscopist to a successful EBUS−TBNA. The DVD included in this book demonstrates how the authors perform EBUS-TBNA emphasizing technical aspect of the procedure. This will ensure readers to fully understand how EBUS-TBNA should be performed.
